Texas Catholic Bishops Issue Statement on Coal Plants
Texas' 15 Catholic bishops today issued a statement calling for lawmakers to adopt energy policy measures that reflect a framework of principles drawn from four major themes of Catholic Social Teaching: Upholding the Right to Life; A Priority for the Poor; The Pursuit of the Common Good; and The Practice of Prudence.
The bishops said legislators "should enact legislation that directs the responsible state agencies to adopt a measured and deliberate approach for the consideration of all permit applications for the construction of new generating facilities, and to ensure that the permit process includes a full
review of the health, environmental and global warming implications of the technologies proposed along with comprehensive analyses of alternative strategies and their comparative costs and benefits."
