Gospel, Truth and Power 2008: Peter Storey Returns to Austin May 30

Sponsored by the Amos Commission of the Austin District of the United Methodist Church, Texas Impact, and Methodist Healthcare Ministries.
Peter Storey, one of Methodism’s great preachers, returns to Austin Friday, May 30 for a half-day workshop open to clergy and laity of all denominations.
With eloquence and energy, Dr. Storey offers wisdom and inspiration for engaging in ministries that go beyond helping those who are hurting to working to do away with the causes of that pain. He will offer insights to help and inspiration to motivate us to become more effectively engaged in ministries that address the causes of need and pain – that is, ministries of justice.
Storey, a former president of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and past president of the South African Council of Churches, was Methodist Bishop of the Johannesburg/Soweto area for 13 years. A national leader in the church struggle against apartheid, Storey co-led an ecumenical delegation to the United Nations, the U.S. Congress and Europe, urging intensified pressure on the apartheid regime in 1984. He co-chaired the regional Peace Accord structures intervening in political violence before South Africa’s first democratic elections and was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to help select the nation’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. More recently, Storey has served on the faculty of Duke University Divinity School.
