Many needy Texas kids get free and reduced-price meals at school during the school year, but during the summer months when school is out these kids are at risk for hunger. The Texas Department of Agriculture provides funding through the Summer Food Service Program to help congregations and community organizations fill this gap and provide food to children in need.
Obesity and poor nutrition have emerged as one of Texas' greatest public health challenges. Both adults and kids in Texas have much higher rates of obesity than the national average, leading to diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases.
